I was pretty excited to buy Stila’s smoky eye palette when it came out with the talking application instructions. I have always been interested in how to apply the perfect smoky eye and Stila’s guaranteed five step perfect smoky eye talking palette seemed like the ideal solution. I bought the emeralds palette which comes with a champagne-gold base color, a shimmery olive lid color, a darker green crease color and a plum liner. The colors look great and blend beautifully together. The palette also comes in the original colors (champagne as the base, a silvery gray for the lid, a dark gray as the contour and a black brown as the liner) and the bronzes (a pink shimmer as the base, a golden bronze shimmer for the lid, a rich warm brown as the contour and a deep matte brown as the liner). But I wasn’t sure whether listening to how to apply the perfect smoky eye would actually pan out. It seems to me that visual instructions would be more helpful than listening to what to do. And I was right, the instructions are way too fast, and if you want to pause the instructions while you’re in the middle of doing step one, you can’t, the instructions start all over again. It does come with a fold out of visual instructions, but they are not all that helpful either. If Stila could come out with some sort of mini video to imbed in the box, or link to download a video after you buy the palette to show you how to apply the shadows, I think that would be much more effective. Don’t buy the palette for the instructions, buy it for the colors, because even if you can’t do Stila’s smoky eye, the colors are very versatile- they look great on their own or if you blend a few together.
