Hancock

Will Smith rules the blockbuster openings on the Fourth of July. Hancock is the fifth movie to open on the biggest summer weekend, the others being Men in Black and its sequel, Independence Day and Wild Wild West. I'll admit I wasn't expecting much from this movie, and to be honest I was more excited about seeing Charlize Theron (I love her, and she's just so gorgeous) and Jason Bateman (always so good) than I was about seeing Will Smith in another lack luster action flick - I am Legend, Bad Boys 2, and the list could go on. But I liked the idea of a an anti-hero superhero, so I was game to see it.

Hancock is a superhero who always seems to cause more harm than good. He's a drunk, lazy, sarcastic guy with incredible powers that the citizens of L.A. would be happier without. Until one day Hancock saves the life of Ray Embrey (Jason Bateman), a PR executive with a heart of gold - not likely in real life, but willing to over look it because Batemen rocks. It becomes Embry's goal to give Hancock the right spin and a little polish so people will see the the hero he actually is, which turns out to be harder than it originally seems to be.

Theron and Batemen put in entertaining performances, and surprisingly so does Smith. He is
actually believable as a screw up superman. But it's the chemistry between the main players that really carries this film, because the storyline sure doesn't. The movie had some funny moments, but it tries a little too hard in the end for poignancy, but over all it was better than I was expecting. If you looking for some laughs, action and a bit of eye candy, Hancock delivers.
