There was a lot of debate, and trying to get the movies I wanted at different times was a challenge, but I'm pretty happy with my selects. Today I'll list the firsts, and tomorrow' post will be the seconds.
First Choices:

Me & Orson Wells - Set in 1937, it's the story of Wells' production of Julius Caesar - lots of hype surrounding this film and it stars Ben Chaplin, Claire Danes and Zac Efron.

The Burning Plain - I love Charlize Theron, so this was a no brainer. She plays the daughter of Kim Basinger in this tale of a mother and daughter trying to reconnect after sharing a difficult past.

Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist - I think this might be my most anticipated pick of the festival. It's based on the book by the same name that I absolutely adored - it was smart, sweet and has ultra cool music references (look out for a killer soundtrack from this one). Michael Cera, who I have loved since Arrested Development - he's just so awkward, stars in the film about two teens that meet one fateful night and go on a fantastic romp through New York. I am so excited for this one that I doubled it up as both a first and second pick.
Zack and Miri Make a Porno - The latest offering from Kevin Smith, who loves Toronto, so I think it's safe to say that he will be at both screenings of this movie, which means a very entertaining Q&A session after the film. It's pretty much what the title indicates, two friends decide to make a porno to make some money.
New York, I Love You - This is the American version of 2006's Paris, je t'aime. It's a film with an ensemble cast that tells a series of love stories all set in New York. It has a pretty amazing cast and looks like a very sweet movie.
Gigantic - This looks like an off beat comedy about a mattress salesman and the girl he falls in love with at his store. It stars ZooeyDeschanel, John Goodman and Paul Dano (the silent brother in Little Miss Sunshine).
Sounds Like Teen Spirit: A Popumentary - a documentary about a group of kids from all over the world that compete in an American Idol-style singing contest. The big difference with this show is that the singers have to write their own music. Looks to be very entertaining.
El Greco - A biopic from Greece/Spain/Hungary about the famous Greek painter, Domenikos Theotokopoulos, known as El Greco. It's a period piece that looks sumptuous and epic, and I'm always a sucker for an historical piece.
Once Upon a Time in Rio - A tale about two lovers in Rio from different backgrounds: a boy from poverty and a girl from the upper class. It looks like Romeo and Juliet set in Rio, probably very sad but utterly romantic. That's the end of this list, but check back tomorrow for the second picks list.
