Baby Mama

When I first saw the trailer for Baby Mama, I totally laughed out loud. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler can do no wrong in my books, and the idea of Poehler being the trashy surrogate mother for Fey’s uptight corporate mom-wanna-be, looked like pure gold. My only reservation was if the movie was going to be like Knocked Up, which I thought was super funny, but I didn’t really want to sit through another movie full of gross birthing jokes. So I was relieved that the movie focused on the two women’s dysfunctional relationship rather than jokes about what positions won’t result in a pregnancy.

Poehler and Fey were hilarious, a great comedy duo that gives new meaning to the buddy film. They bring their chemistry from SNL to the big screen flawlessly as Fey is the straight man for Poehler’s off the wall antics. The writing for the scenes between the two is sharp and in some moments hysterical. There are also some gems when Poehler shares screen time with Dax Shepard, who plays her boyfriend that is straight out of a Jerry Springer episode.

Steve Martin shows up as a new age hippy that owns the Whole Foods-esque grocery store chain where Fey’s character works, and Greg Kinnear plays Fey’s love interest who I thought was kind of flat, but didn’t distract from the funny ladies.

The movie gets a little cheesy at the end and of course and pushes for happy endings for every character, but overall definitely worth a look and a laugh.
