television comes in the form of Gossip Girl. Based on the book series of the same name by Cecily von Ziegesar the stories revolve around a privileged group of Upper East Side brats that sleep around, get drunk and wear fabulously expensive clothing. They are chic, bitchy and completely entertaining.
We have come a long way from the once thought
scandalous Dawson’s Creek, which today seems
rather conservative, even if students were sleeping with teachers, moving through to The O.C., which gave audiences a few shake ups with drug use, alcoholism and of course, lots of sex. Or if we ruminate even further, we can dig back to 90210 – which is making a come back, My So Called Life (c’mon who didn’t love Jordan Catalano, I even dyed my hair Claire Danes’ heinous red color because of that show!), Party of Five and the list could go on. But have these shows with exception of my hair fiasco, ever been quite as stylish? I think not.
Gossip Girl takes teen fashion to a whole new level,
and in my opinion, fashion is what makes this show. Since it first aired in the fall, the show has driven sales of headbands, different designer bags, jewelry, complete fashion lines, and the list could go on. Teens are watching and taking cues from the über-trendy characters to see what’s hot now. Does it matter that the ratings haven’t been stellar or that the writing is mediocre…NO! Audiences are still tuning in: the people are gorgeous, and the clothes are even better!
Don’t get the wrong idea, the show does have
engaging stories with enough bad behavior to keep people interested– the Serena drama, the Georgina scandal, and Chuck and Blair alone are enough to make me happy– they are completely evil and scathing, but oh so enjoyable to watch as they manipulate and scheme while looking incredible. But the fashion is what really matters. In fact, it is so critical to the show that the website even has a section dedicated to the clothes from individual episodes which you can buy online.
As I was watching the season finale last night I
was a little blue that I have to wait until fall for
more Gossip Girl eye candy. The finale had it’s
dramatic moments, but again the high points were the clothes (especially Blair’s cocktail dress at the wedding and her sailor number at the heliport- they were phenomenal!). I guess I can watch the re-runs for my fix, but I can’t wait to see what will be on the fashion plate for audiences to devour in the fall!
