I just read on the Hollywood Reporter website that a possible Gossip Girl spinoff could be in the works. The new series would either focus on the Jenny Humphrey character, played by Taylor Momsen, or GG would work in a new character in the fall to take over the the new show.Whether it's the new character or Jenny Humphrey, the story goes that she will have a few horribly embarrassing moments which absolutely kill her self-esteem, not to mention her image, and force her to choose to either be held back a year in school or leave the city and go to a new school.
Obviously she chooses the new school, which happens to be an all girls boarding school, and she tries to re-invent herself as a Blair Waldorf-esque queen bee. This storyline is from Cecily von Ziegesar's other hit series The It Girl.
In my opinion it seems a bit to early for a spin-off after just one season and mediocre ratings. I think the execs at the CW may be jumping the gun a bit on this one, but who knows when it
would actually begin to air. I think they should focus on GG a bit longer before they start thinking spinoff. The other thing I'm not sure about is whether I like the Jenny Humphrey character enough to get me to watch her own show. I like where GG is going with the Blair/Jenny rivalry, it's great power struggle, and the catty viciousness is so entertaining.
Most likely the new show would copycat the look of GG, so maybe I'll tune in to see what the characters are wearing. One thing's for sure, I hope the folks at the CW don't let GG suffer when this new show hits, like Dawson's Creek did when Felicity started. Felicity took all of the talent and left Dawson in the dust. That would be so tragic since I love GG so! I guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens.
