The New 90210 - Crazy Skinny!

As I have been watching the first few episodes of the much awaited new 90210 series, I have noticed something rather interesting: why are the stars so freaking skinny? If you tuned in for the first episode, did you notice what the high schoolers were eating? The main character, Annie Wilson (played by super petite Shenae Grimes) was eating a teeny side salad for lunch, and just sort of picked at it. Her friend the ultra-tiny Silver, played by Jessica Stroup, is so skinny it's painful to see her in size negative 2 skinny jeans.

After the first episode aired there was lots of discussion on TV shows, blogs and magazines about how thin these stars are, and how they are going to be role models for lots of teenage girls who are already so negatively influenced by the weight obsessed media. Funnily enough, because of all of the criticism of that stupid salad, in a more recent episode, Annie was eating a burger and fries. Did she actually eat it, no not really, but Naomi Clark (and equally skinny AnnaLynn McCord) poached a few fries. It was a totally ridiculous moment, because you know that girls who are that thin wouldn't ever eat a burger or fries. That was the network trying to get people off their back for perpetuating the skinny image.

The latest issue of US Weekly (pictured above) has dedicated their front cover to the women of 90210, and how they have been ordered to gain weight. This has been the trend in Hollywood for so long now, is anyone surprised? Remember when the female cast of Ally McBeal got so incredibly tiny? It was like they were competing for who could look the most anorexic. But no matter how much we criticize, as long as super skinny is considered ultra chic, these girls' figures, no matter how painfully thin, will be considered desirable and will be the model to which girls will aspire.
