You may be wondering why I am writing about a Chanel shopping bag, well, it's not a shopping bag at all. It's actually Chanel's Essential Handbag for Spring/ Summer 2009 that takes inspiration from the historic boutique's paper gift bag located at 31 Rue Cambon in Paris. The bag is constructed out of super smooth calf skin and comes in three different sizes in the classic Chanel palette of pale pink (only the smallest bag comes in the pink), white and black. First things first, I have to give the designers props because they got the super sharp corners of the shopping bag, and corded handles to work in leather. That couldn't have been easy. And the over all effect does really look like a shopping bag, but is that what you want to carry around all day? To me it looks like a Warhol art project- it just seems a little gimmicky coming from Chanel. And isn't the whole giant label/ logo craze over?
The bag is a definite statement piece, but I'm not sure if I totally dig it. And
with the price tags these bags carry (small $1525, medium $2625 and large $2995) you have to really be into it. Usually I don't get down on a bag simply due to its price if I think it's an amazing bag. But the Essential Handbag just doesn't justify that kind of expense for a rectangular bag and a logo. I know true Chanel lovers will be all over it, but in the end it's just not my style. If you'd like to check out these bags and others from the Spring/ Summer 09 line, visit Chanel.
