Made of Honor

I am a total sucker for chick flicks, but recently I have been disappointed in what Hollywood has been offering. I don’t like high schmaltz a la P.S. I Love You, but the trailers for Made of Honor looked funny and not too mushy, even though the plot wasn’t horribly original – basically My Best Friend’s Wedding in reverse.

I used to be a huge fan of McDreamy in Grey’s Anatomy (but the series just hasn’t been that great lately), and I loved Enchanted, so I was eager to see Patrick Dempsey in a romantic comedy without quite so much singing. The story goes that Patrick Dempsey’s character is a ladies man who befriends Michelle Monaghan in college after mistaking her for her roommate as he climbed into her bed for some late night nookie. They became best friends from that moment on, but it’s very clear that Michelle Monaghan’s character longs for something more. Only once she has decided to marry someone else does Dempsey realize that he loves her, and accepts the ridiculous idea of being her maid of honor to win her heart back.

Just a little side note – The scenes where Monaghan and Dempsey are in college really freaked me out – I don’t know how they did it, but Dempsey was made to look so much younger. He looked just like he did in Can’t Buy Me Love and for that whole section of the film all I could think of was what a nerd he was back then! back to the review…

The film has some really great moments, especially involving Dempsey and the other bridesmaids. Having just been a maid of honor myself, these scenes really made me laugh as you watch Dempsey navigate through the tricky waters of being a bridesmaid: the rivalry between the girls, the drama of bridesmaid dresses, shower etiquette and picking out bridal trousseau. Of course, Dempsey has his crew of guy friends that offer inane advice and help him try to beat up on the prospective groom but the film doesn’t really offer more than that: some funny scenes with a little romance thrown in, and the resulting film is pretty entertaining, but nothing new.
